Does BBBS Mentoring Work?

We know children who have positive adult role models in their lives make better choices. This notion is proven by both National and Local research. Big Brothers Big Sisters is considered a best practice approach to mentoring.  A study conducted by an independent  research firm, Public/Private Ventures, confirmed our effectiveness. This study found that young people matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for a year or more are:

• 53% less likely to skip school
• 46% less likely to begin using drugs
• 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
• one third less likely to use violence
• more confident in themselves and their school performance
• show improved relationships with their peers and families

Community-Based Program: effects on children matched with a Big (Reported by volunteers)

	87% - More self confident
	75% - Better able to express feelings
	54% - Better attitude towards school
	67% - Improved relations with adults

Site-Based Programs: effects on children matched with a Big (Reported by teachers)

	89% - More self confident
	82% - Better able to make decisions
	82% - Improved academic performance
	79% - Better relations with peers
