Does BBBS Mentoring Work?
We know children who have positive adult role models in their lives make better choices. This notion is proven by both National and Local research. Big Brothers Big Sisters is considered a best practice approach to mentoring. A study conducted by an independent research firm, Public/Private Ventures, confirmed our effectiveness. This study found that young people matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for a year or more are:
- 53% less likely to skip school
- 46% less likely to begin using drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
- one third less likely to use violence
- more confident in themselves and their school performance
- show improved relationships with their peers and families
Additionally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Gallatin County evaluates our performance, utilizing a Program Outcome Evaluation. We conduct this evaluation annually, which measures the impacts we have on children. Volunteers, teachers and parents provide input for these evaluations.
