Community-Based Program
In the Community-Based program, we "match" volunteers (Bigs) with children (Littles.)  These matches typically spend time enjoying activities together three times a month.  During these outings, they cultivate relationships that provide children with skills to manage every day challenges.

We serve any child in our service area who wants or needs a positive adult role model.  A volunteer Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Couple or Big Family becomes a friend to the child and the relationship is supported by professional staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Through simple friendship, Bigs experience the joy of helping children discover a world of possibilities and opportunities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schools
Volunteers are matched with Littles in a supervised setting in our local rural elementary and middle schools, typically once a week during the academic year. Teachers and counselors identify children who can benefit most from interaction with a caring adult. As their friendships evolve, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun.

Additionally, there are several related programs that are customized to specific categories of children and volunteers. Our school-based programs are:

The Mentors Program was established in January 1995 at Monforton School.  The program was expanded into Gallatin Gateway School in September 2004.  Students from Bozeman Senior High School, in grades 10-12, are matched with students in grades 2-8 at Monforton School and Gallatin Gateway School.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays the high school students meet with their elementary student at Monforton, and on Mondays and Wednesdays they meet with their student at Gallatin Gateway.  Matches work on school assignments, read, talk, and play games.  This program also involves a variety of group activities, including Bowl for Kids' Sake, Garden Day, a Holiday Party, and an end-of-the-year picnic.

The Rural Transitional Program is a school-based mentoring program designed to assist rural students from small elementary schools in making a successful transition into Bozeman Senior High School.  This program works by engaging eighth graders from the outlying schools (Anderson, Gallatin Gateway, LaMotte, Monforton, and Ophir) in group activities at Bozeman High.  Students from Bozeman Senior High School in grades 10-12 serve as mentors and get to know these students during activities and presentations.  Mentors can introduce eighth graders to other students, answer questions about high school, and generally act as a friend and resource at the High School.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters/America Reads Program is a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP.)  This program involves community residents who serve as mentors in the Belgrade school system.  Volunteers of all ages come from the surrounding areas to meet with a child twice a week for an hour throughout the school year.  Matches spend time together working on academics such as reading, math, and science.  They also talk and form friendships.

The Panther Pals Program matches Belgrade High students, grades 11-12, with an elementary school student, grades 2-4, from one of the following schools: Heck, Quaw, Intermediate, or Ridgeview.  Matches meet for an hour a week, and typically work on school work like math, reading, and science.  Once a month, selected matches meet as a group to participate in a social activity or artwork.

The following descriptions explain the Site-based Programs in our Branch and Satellite offices.

Big Sky Big Brothers Big Sisters was established in August 2000 to meet the needs of the children in the Big Sky community.  In addition to its Community-based program, the Big Sky Buddies Program matches older Ophir School students with younger students who meet for half an hour once a week during the school day.

The Ennis School Program is a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ennis and the Target Program in the Ennis Schools.  Last year, 46 high school Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors were matched with children in grades K-6 on a one-to-one basis.  The purpose of the program is to form a friendship between a Mentor and Mentee to assist the Mentee with social skills, academics, and self-esteem.  Ennis also has a successful after-school program, Colt Club in the local elementary school.  For more information on the Ennis program, please contact Nancy Dombrock, Satellite Director at [ email ] or (406) 682-7417.

The West Yellowstone School Program matches adults in the community and high school students from grades 9-12 with elementary students K-6.  They meet one day a week for about 50 minutes.  They eat lunch together, play games, talk, work on school assignments or read.  The West Yellowstone program has several school-based matches that have become part of the Community-based program. For more information on the West Yellowstone program, please contact Aarynn Barth, Satellite Director at [ email ] or (406) 646-1015.
